Geert Verbeke
Geert Verbeke is a full professor of biostatistics at the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (Biomedical Sciences Group). He has worked at KU Leuven since 1989 and has built a career around research, teaching, and scientific service, both nationally and internationally.
Within KU Leuven, he served on various committees and consultative bodies and took up various positions. Since 2008, he has been head of the biostatistics research unit L-BioStat. In the period from 2012 to 2020, he was elected department chair twice, and in this position he served as departments' representative in the executive board of the Biomedical Sciences Group from 2016 to 2018.
Geert wants to push for more transparency in decision-making. Within KU Leuven, there are many policy-making bodies with representation from the various staff groups. Unfortunately, these rarely lead to the level of consultation and participation that can be expected of an academic institution. As a result, many opportunities remain un(der)utilised. He strongly believes that a widely supported policy is an important stimulus for staff well-being, satisfaction, drive and motivation, which in itself leads to (even) better results, quality growth and increased (inter)national exposure. Such policies therefore benefit both employer and employee. Geert believes that the ACLVB, as a politically independent organisation, is best placed to help realise steps in the right direction.
Geert has a partner, three grown-up children, and an adopted Spanish dog. He enjoys travelling, hiking, cycling (on one or two wheels), film and music, as well as an evening out with friends or family.
