Works Council
The Works Council task mainly concerns:
- to provide advice and to express any suggestions or objections regarding all measures that could change the work organization, the employment conditions and the profitability of the company;
- to receive from the head of the company in economic and financial terms:
a) information regarding productivity as well as information of a general nature regarding the progress of the company;
b) information, reports and documents that can inform the works council about the company's operating results.
Since the social elections of November 2020, KU Leuven has only two works councils:
- a Leuven-Brussels-Antwerp-Limburg works council for the branches in Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp, Mechelen, Geel, Diepenbeek and Sint-Katelijne Waver;
- a works council for East and West Flanders for the branches in Kortrijk, Ostend, Bruges, Ghent and Aalst.
The Works Council is composed in accordance with the legally established provisions. In general, this means that the Works Council:
- on the one hand, it is composed of the head of the company and one or several actual and deputy representatives appointed by him (to be chosen from management personnel);
- on the other hand, consists of a number of effective and deputy staff representatives, elected through the social elections (maximum 25 effective and 25 deputy mandates).
The law provides for a composition on the personnel side via different categories:
- 15 mandates for “white-collar workers” (0 mandates for “blue-collar workers” since everyone at KU Leuven is employed with a white-collar contract);
- 3 mandates for “young workers” (anyone under the age of 25 can apply);
- 7 mandates for “executives” (mainly ZAP, research management, ATP from grade 9).
