Gretl Van Ourti
Gretl was hired at the ILT in 1991 as a Japanese language teacher to teach students of the Japanese Studies department at KU Leuven. Initially, she worked on a small percentage, which systematically expanded over the years to full time. For 10 years she was an internship supervisor for students taking the specific teacher training program in Japanese language and culture.
In 2016-2017, we had the recovery plan within the faculty of arts. This forced the elimination of the specific teacher training program within Japanese studies and required staff layoffs. A general rule was applied that all temporary contracts would not be renewed.
"I was unlucky," Gretl continued, "I was only 45% permanent with the ILT and had worked for the faculty of arts for over 10 years with 55% in temporary contracts. I contacted the ACLVB KU Leuven team and, thanks to their intervention, they sought a realignment within KU Leuven. I was fortunately able to stay at ILT and Japanese Studies as a Japanese language instructor, a job I really enjoy."
"In addition, I work 10 hours a week at the Study Guidance Department of Arts among other things as a course supervisor for the milestone students of Chinese Studies at KU Leuven. An extension, which brings enrichment on many levels, not least that I get to be part of the new unified cool team of STOFF within the faculty of arts. "
Outside of work, Gretl keeps busy with her family and friends, zhineng qigong, singing, and sports. She is an active volunteer within The World Consciousness Community, an international organization that unites people with a heart for zhineng qigong. Every Sunday she is leading a session of qi gong in the park of Edegem. "I like to enjoy life in a calm, simple way," she says.
